Apple Cider Vinegar – one of nature’s great gifts

We’ve been deepening our passion for botanical alchemy here at AMLY, creating our own Apple Cider Vinegar on the farm in East Sussex, to add to our new bio-fermented essence range. This truly natural ingredient is brimming with amino acids and antioxidants that will supercharge your skincare regime, helping to hydrate, soften and nourish the skin.

Apple Cider Vinegar is created by exposing crushed apples (or cider) to yeast, which ferment the sugars transforming them into alcohol. Once friendly bacteria are added to the alcohol solution, it further ferments and turns into acetic acid — the main active compound in vinegar.

Organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar contains a ‘mother’ which are strands of proteins, enzymes and friendly bacteria that give the product its cloudy appearance, and it’s in this ‘mother’ that numerous health benefits reside. Supplementing a healthy diet with 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar a day can support the body in lowering blood sugar, assist weight loss, lower cholesterol and improve heart health.

It’s long been known for its antibacterial, antiseptic and antifungal properties, due to the concentration of organic acids it contains.

In fact, Hippocrates – referred to as ‘the father of modern medicine’ – is known to have prescribed vinegar during the 4th century BC, treating wounds with it and used apple cider vinegar mixed with honey for a variety of ills, including coughs and colds. It’s healing benefits have been used elsewhere throughout ancient history from soldiers using it to disinfect and speed up wound healing, to Cleopatra reportedly dissolving pearls in it to create elixirs.
